The Halloween update has changed, added and fixed a few things. However the game did not officially go into beta yet and as such you still cant die. Another big minus is that the Nether dimension cannot yet be accessed from the SMP server, only from single player. This will however be fixed soon as Notch plans to focus primary on the Multilayer part of the game.
Changes to the server:
Monsters have been turned off because after the update 5 times as many would spawn at night causing for amazing lag spikes.

Glad you could join us. Currently a small Minecraft Alpha server is up and running approx. 24/7 hours a day. If you would like to join us and help us accomplish the many goals we have set, feel free to drop into the server. Currently since the server is still young we are just setting up camp and creating a few items and always in the process of exploring new caves in the surrounding areas near spawn.
